SKA'S NOT FUCKING DEAD

WTF IS SKA

ska is basically a precursor to reggae, coming out of combined influences from american jazz and r&b and jamaican folk music originally, and later, punk influences from british and american scenes. all that really matters to me though is its gotta have a walking bassline, guitar on the off beats, and ideally an entire brass section. you know the suite life on deck theme song? yeah basically that

everyone clowns on ska for no reason and thinks it only existed in the 90s :( let me enlighten u if u were lucky enough to stumble over to this page. there is definitely a very rich history before 80-90s era third wave type ska but im not smart enough to write an essay about it plus i dont listen to that stuff all that much anyways so this page will be focused on third wave and post third wave ska okay? okay

my recs

  • Streetlight Manifesto - Everything Goes Numb probably in my top 3 albums ever of all time regardless of genre. tomas kalnoky's writing and guitar is so unmatched. the whole bands so talented, if you like this album, definitely check out the rest of their stuff, including their bandits of the acoustic revolution project. their live shows with full orchestra ensemble are insane
  • Operation Ivy Self Titled this is the og ska punk imo. classic. if ur into punk rock and somehow havent heard this already, this ones for u. if u like this album also check out and out came the wolves by rancid, theyre basically a later iteration of op ivy, slightly more cleaned up but very similar vibes!
  • JER - Bothered/Unbothered oh man, JER's such a cool fella. if ska ever gets popular in the mainstream again i swear it'll all be thanks to them honestly. this album absolutely slaps and is so overtly anti racist / transphobic, and in support of labor rights and intersectionality. they also do a lot of cool shit in the band We Are The Union and on their youtube channel Skatune Network, where they make ska covers of popular cartoon and video game songs, which also of course bang so unbelivably hard.
  • Reel Big Fish - Why Do They Rock So Hard? this ones more out of obligation if anything. i think rbf is still pretty decent and fun, but theyre definitely not the best. if you wanna hear the platonic ideal of 90s third wave ska, i think its this.
  • Jeff Rosenstock - SKA DREAM i love basically everything jeff makes tbh. he's not even usually a ska artist, this album is just covers of his own album NO DREAM except its all ska now, which is a really funny concept to me but its really well done. this is closer to the classic third wave style modernized in my opinion.
  • Kmoy - The Precure Album one of my favorite things about the genre is how fun and silly it can be sometimes and this is one a perfect example of this. the precure ska album, what else can i say really?
